Refiner's Forge
Timberframing Chisel
Regular price
$225.00
This is a serious timber framer's tool. Coming in at a total length of just over 18 inches, this 1, 1.5, or 2" wide timber framing chisel will get the job done. The chisel body measures 8 inches and the socket and handle adds another 10 inches.
I like the socket design for timber framing chisels as I think they are better designed to take the abuse of heavy work. In traditional fashion I forge weld a piece of high carbon steel onto the mild steel body to form the cutting edge. The cutting edge is ground to 25 degrees and the back is ground as flat as possible. I bevel the top edges for a cleaner look and a more comfortable feel. I shape the socket by drawing out the steel in a fan shape and then rolling it over and forge welding it together. Each handle is hand turned out of ash. A heavy duty ferrule is added. The socket tang is then whittled by hand to fit into the chisel socket snugly, and then epoxied. If you prefer to be able to break it down, let me know and I'll leave out the epoxy.
Each timber framing chisel is made to order, right here in my shop in rural Virginia. I purchase my steel locally and all of the handle wood is grown and harvested locally as well. If you have any design features that you'd like to add or change let me know, I'm happy to do it!
